Starting up with the Super Bowl
February 5, 2007 at 9:31 pm | In business, entrepreneurship, media, north carolina, technology, video | Leave a CommentOne of the first ads to run during last night’s Super Bowl was a funny, good-looking spot for Doritos. You may have seen it — a young guy is driving along, trying to eat his bag of chips when he becomes distracted by a pretty woman and her bag of Doritos. Hilarity ensues.
The ad wasn’t produced by a big Madison Avenue firm. Instead, it was part of a widely-promoted contest by the chip maker to generate fan-created commercials for the big game, and it was chosen out of more than 1,000 to air during the Super Bowl.
This particular ad is special because it was filmed at Waverly Place shopping center outside of Raleigh. Oh, and it cost all of $12 to make.
It was the work of Five Point Products — small company of 20-somethings, based out of Cary. Two of the company’s members starred in the commercial, and the rest of the crew shot and edited the film.
For their efforts, they were awarded $10,000 and flown down to Miami for the game. But the company, which is just 5 months old, is obviously getting tons of publicity, and of course, they have one gigantic star in their portfolio already.
Bev’s Big Stand
February 5, 2007 at 8:30 pm | In north carolina, policy, politics | Leave a CommentLate Monday evening, Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue issued a short statement calling for a moratorium on the death penalty. According to the N&O, she said that there are questions dealing with both lethal injection and the role of doctors in the executions which need to be addressed before the process should continue.
Aside from the fact that the Council of State is supposed to look at this issue in detail at a meeting tomorrow, Perdue’s announcement is politically significant because she is widely considered to be a Democratic front runner in the election to replace term-limited Gov. Mike Easley.
