Per the Triangle Biz Journal, N.C. State University is proposing a new program dedicated to helping spur entrepreneurial growth across the state.

NCSU’s plan calls for a new academic major that builds on an existing minor in entrepreneurship, as well as experience-based learning opportunities.

The program also will expand NCSU’s team of “field faculty” focused on community economic development. The new faculty positions will target low-income counties where recruiting firms have been less successful.

NCSU plans to partner with the private sector to establish new regional capital funds to increase access to early-stage equity.

NCSU also plans to partner with community colleges and other campuses in the University of North Carolina system to provide training in business planning and production efficiency.

Even more intriguing: the N&O coverage says the $2M request to the General Assembly also proposes the creation of “a web platform to connect entrepreneurs in diverse industries.”

A few interesting factoids from the N&O coverage:

There are more than 523,000 self-employed sole proprietors and about 109,000 microenterprise businesses — businesses with five or fewer employees, according to NCSU. Approximately one-third of these businesses are in high-tech fields, and the rest are in construction, hospitality, health, and many service sectors.

About 23,000 new businesses start each year. By the fourth year, however, about half of those businesses fail.
